Here’s the best way to apply eye cream

It goes without saying that absolutely everyone’s skin care routine will differ. Some of us have two to three products we swear by, our night-time routine takes ten minutes tops and that’s how we like it! Then there’s those whose bathrooms resemble a scientific laboratory, you’ve got a product (or two) for every problem area, and you’re the go-to-gal for all skin care advice.

Targeting delicate skin

No matter where you lie on the spectrum, there’s one product that many of us use every single day, and that’s eye cream. People can be confused about how to apply eye cream correctly. From dark circles to puffy eyes, and under-eye wrinkles, there are quite a few concerns revolving around the under eye area. And, whilst you might think a standard moisturiser can tackle these issues, it turns out our under eye area needs some special attention. This is because the skin under our eyes is extremely sensitive, it’s prone to early signs of aging so the chances of fine lines and wrinkles are heightened.

Dermatologist Patricia Farris MD, a clinical associate professor at Tulane University School of Medicine explains that “Eye creams are formulated specifically for the delicate skin around your eyes, so they tend to be a bit thicker”.

“They contain more oil than regular facial lotions, and they have a lot of active ingredients aimed at the problems we see around the eyes”, explains Farris.

And, as any good dermatologist will tell you, prevention is easier than the cure so investing in a good eye cream even from a young age (late 20s), will help to prevent puffy eyes, fine lines, and under-eye wrinkles even longer.

How to apply eye cream the very best way

STEP 1: Put a small pea-size amount directly on your ring finger

As mentioned,  eye creams tend to be thicker than a normal moisturiser and this is because they are super concentrated – so a pea-sized amount is more than enough for both eyes. Use your ring finger as this will have the lightest touch, as it’s a sensitive area you don’t want to put too much pressure on the skin.

STEP 2: Apply in small dots

Start at the inner corner of your eye and apply the eye cream in small dots all the way up to your brow bone. Gently tap to stimulate circulation until all of the product is absorbed. Try not to pull or stretch the skin when completing this step.

STEP 3: Pause before applying other products

Give your eye cream around 90 seconds to fully absorb before you apply concealer, makeup or any other skin care products. And, that’s it!

Everyone will apply eye cream around your eyes a little differently, but the bottom line is to always be gentle. And, not to use too much. Unfortunately packing on the product won’t make it any more effective, a pea size is all you need to keep away those under eye wrinkles and puffy eyes.

Whether you choose to take the au naturale approach to ageing, or get by with a little help from your favourite eye creams, ageing should be a celebration!
