Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that affects the skin. It shows up as a rash that is itchy with silvery scales on any part of your body. Experts believe that the skin inflammation you see on people with psoriasis is actually the result of their immune system overreacting and attacking their healthy skin cells by mistake. Psoriasis is caused by your skin cells growing way too fast resulting in dry, scaly patches.
One thing to note about psoriasis is that it can’t be cured. However, your symptoms can be managed. It is essential that you have a daily skincare routine to help relieve your inflammation as well as hydrate your skin.

Psoriasis is a chronic and inflammatory skin condition where your skin cells reproduce at an accelerated rate which causes a buildup of dead skin cells. Skin cell production normally takes about a month but for people with psoriasis, this process is sped up to a few days which means there’s not enough time for skin to fall off and you’re left with red patches and silvery scales.
Psoriasis can often be triggered by an underlying illness or infection – because our immune system is attacking healthy cells by mistake, it manifests itself in the skin.
Psoriasis affects about 73,000 people in Ireland and about 2 in 100 people in the UK which is approximately over 1 million people. The severity of the condition varies and while it isn’t something that can be cured, it can be managed for a better quality of life.
