Menopause, also known as 'the change', which most women in their late 30s to early 40s dread. This phase in a woman's life is when she stops having periods and her ovaries lose their reproductive function. Normally, this happens between the ages of 45 and 55 but it can happen earlier for some women. Menstruation occurs due to hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) produced by the ovaries. As women age, less oestrogen is produced which causes 'the change' – this phase can take up to several years. When symptoms arise gradually, before menstruation stops completely, this is what's called as peri-menopause. From hot flushes to night sweats to low mood, symptoms can be distressing. In addition to this, your skin changes during peri-menopause and menopause. Your skin's ability to retain moisture is reduced which leads to redness, dryness, spots and more pronounced signs of ageing. Here at Poko, we understand hormonal imbalance and we want to support you at this phase in your life with a balanced and holistic approach to your skin health.

Menopause is a stage in a woman's life when her period stops and can no longer get pregnant. In Ireland, more than half of Irish women are going through difficult menopause symptoms with the average woman experiencing up to seven symptoms at once. In the same research, it is revealed that 86% of women reported menopause having a big impact on their lives.
Since Poko was founded due to PCOS, a hormonal imbalance which is often mismanaged and misdiagnosed due to the lack of education and resources on the subject – we understand the difficulty and roadbloacks women going through menopause face in being heard and their symptoms to be taken seriously. This is why we developed products we think would help in managing some of the symptoms that women are going through with menopause.
