Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition which affects almost 1 in 5 women of childbearing age, which means you most likely know somebody who has this condition. At it’s core it is a fertility problem, as women with this condition produce a higher-than-normal amount of male hormones. This imbalance can mean loss of or irregular menstrual cycles and difficulty conceiving. It is one of the leading causes of infertility in women.
Poko’s founder, Justine O’Hanlon has first hand experience with the condition, being diagnosed at 24 years old, and while PCOS is something she has learnt to live with the side effects that occur in women with PCOS where a pain point for her. Wanting to create a brand that would support her sensitive hormonal skin from both the inside and out was a passion for her, so she got to work with the Poko team to formulate and create products that tackle skin issues often seen in women with PCOS that also help with signs of ageing as hormonal acne is not just for teenagers.

PCOS causes the overproduction of male hormones called androgens, which stimulate the production of oil in the skin. This can lead to hormonal acne and breakouts on the face, back, neck and chest. Poko has the perfect products to help you tackle these breakouts and fade blemishes night and day.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal issue which can be present among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS produce higher than normal male hormones called androgens which can affect fertility and the menstrual cycle. It currently affects nearly 1 in 5 women of child bearing age in the UK and Ireland.
Due to the increase in male hormones in the body women with PCOS tend to have larger ovaries than a healthy ovary and contain twice as many follicles on the ovaries. These follicles are under-developed sacs which release eggs during ovulation, however in PCOS these sacs are often not able to release eggs. As a result, women can often lose their period or have irregular cycles due to a lack of ovulation.
PCOS can also lead to a number of unpleasant side effects due to the fluctuations in hormones. These can be visible side effects such as excess hair growth on the face & body, weight gain, or hormonal acne. There are also a number of invisible side effects such as increased anxiety & stress, depression, sleep disruptions or fatigue. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you should speak with your doctor about treatment or management plans and try to adjust your lifestyle to incorporate coping techniques to deal with them.
Poko was founded due to the visible side effects of PCOS and how they can lead to some of the invisible side effects and a lack of confidence. Poko’s founder wanted to create products that support women through their PCOS journey and give them the tools and awareness around PCOS to be able to handle it.
