Cruelty-free skincare - what does it mean?

As more and more skincare brands move towards sustainability, our products are labelled with terms like, “cruelty-free”, “vegan-friendly” and “organic”. We’ll be honest. Using a range of sustainable, cruelty-free skincare makes us feel good, like we’re doing our bit! But what do these terms mean? Keep scrolling to learn about sustainable skincare!

What is cruelty-free skincare?

At its bare minimum, cruelty-free skincare means that a product and its ingredients aren’t tested on animals. Many skincare brands, like Poko, exclusively produce cruelty-free skincare products.

However, this might not always be the case. If you’re looking to make the switch to cruelty-free skincare, you might come across phrases like, “not tested on animals”.

Don’t let that put you at ease. Some brands use “not tested on animals” as a loophole to refer to the final product. This means that at any stage of product development, other product ingredients may have been tested on animals.

But don’t worry, finding out if your product of choice is truly cruelty-free is simple!

Why going cruelty-free matters

You might think that animal testing is a necessary evil. This might have been true, back when skincare products were originally mass-produced for a large market.

However, the technology surrounding skincare has come a long way since then. Scientists can now reconstruct human skin for testing. According to PETA, this provides testers with more accurate results, as products are tested on actual human skin.

This is a great alternative to animal testing, product developers and testers won’t have to account for species difference while testing. Removing animals from the testing process also be cheaper, and it’s definitely less cruel.

Why Poko is cruelty-free

At Poko, we aim to uphold the highest standards of cruelty-free skincare and cosmetics. We only work with labs that have a Cruelty Free process and are working towards being certified cruelty free. No Poko products are tested on animals at any stage of production.
